This old colonial-style house lies in Bangkok's busy commercial district opposite Central Silom. It is owned by famous restaurateur Kriangkai Thiennukul, the owner of Milk Plus. You can eat in the adjacent garden, or inside, where Laotian memorabilia creates an authentic atmosphere. Café Laos offers Laos-Issan dishes such as Miang Pla Chon Gled Hima (serpent-head fish in snowflakes), served with miang (peanuts, baby dried shrimp, lemon rind, and others things wrapped in chao poo leaf); tom som gai (sour chicken soup with tamarind leaf), and crispy frog topped with basil leaves.

Suan Pakkad Palace
The well-tended grounds, known literally as Lettuce Garden Palace, are a beautiful lush contrast to the noisy concrete jungle outside the perimeter. The traditional wooden Thai buildings were built in common rather than royal style on the orders of a granddaughter of King Rama IV. Today they contain her substantial collection of historical artifacts. The rear Lacquer Pavilion was moved from the former capital, Ayutthaya. While the artworks and architecture are noteworthy, you may find yourself simply lingering throughout the wonderful gardens.

Bars, Pubs & Tavern :
Austin Pub
One of the newer bars in the Khao San Road area, the Austin Pub has a strong British influence, right down to the sound system, featuring much Brit-pop, although the DJ seems happy to comply with any requests for the musically homesick. There is no food on offer, but this pub is primarily a place to talk, hang out and drink, with a wide variety of beers, spirits and cocktails. Split over two levels, there highly competitive snookers play out on the ground floor, while the spiral staircase leads upstairs to an enormous television. The clientele is predominately Thai.

Located just off of Khao San Road, this bar is worth the trek for the music alone. A comfortable two-level setting, where backpackers and Thais gather to check out a wide range of sounds from ambient groove, to lounge, funk, techno and drum'n'bass. The nice balcony level allows ample opportunity for people-watching. There is table seating, so if you are hungry, choose from the usual Thai/Western menu. The cocktails are recommended but most patrons opt for a gin and tonic as the perfect groove accompaniment. Trendy yet friendly, Bangkok Bar signifies the gradual renewal of the Khao San area

Gulliver's Travellers Tavern
Drinking on the backpacker ghetto of Khao San Road traditionally revolved around dingy bars and cheap beer, but the new scene calls for something a little more sophisticated. Gulliver's, a big Western-style bar, was probably the first of these. The air-conditioned interior has the usual range of American paraphernalia carefully disguising a rather decent bar, with pool and foosball tables. The music is mainstream pop at a volume that can make conversation difficult, but the real surprise is the impressively varied menu of very tasty Western and Thai food. North American and European sports programs are screened throughout the day

Bar Name Huntsman Pub
This large and lively pub is a split-level establishment with a big central bar, dance floor, stage and booths along the walls, which are lined with English county maps, coats-of-arms and other British collectibles. The Huntsman's Filipino house band can be heard cranking out all the latest pop hits daily from 9.00pm to 12.45am. The usual range of alcohol is available, with pitchers of fresh draft beer probably the best bargain. The menu offers great British pub favories like Shepherd's Pie

There is live music on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays to keep patrons entertained. An extensive menu includes set lunches, snacks and the usual Western pub fare. The selection of alcoholic drinks is generous, with Guinness (of course), Kilkenny's and a wide variety of whiskey available.
